Frequently asked questions

Who can join?

The club is open to all UCC students over 18 years of age.

Do I need to have a diving certification?

No, we are affiliated with the Irish Underwater Council (CFT) which allows our instructors to train you from scratch and award certifications which will be recognised worldwide.

How much does it cost?

We try to keep costs as low as possible, the annual costs are below:

CFT Membership Equipment levy Total
Students €55 €50 €105
Non-students €110 €100 €210

Do I need my own equipment?

No, the only equipment you need to own are your mask, snorkel, fins and boots. These can be bought at a discounted price (usually around €120) through the club at the beginning of training. You also require a CFT logbook which is €35 and can also be bought through the club. The rest of the required equipment can be borrowed from the club.

I have a medical condition, can I dive?

It depends, some medical conditions are contraindications to diving. All divers joining the club must undergo a medical with their GP to prove they are fit to dive. Your doctor will tell you if it is unsafe for you to dive.

Is diving dangerous?

Not particularly, while there are inherent risks in diving like many other sports, with adequate training it’s possible to dive very safely. The vast majority of diving accidents occur due to lack of training or people failing to observe correct safety procedures.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes, you don’t need to be an olympic swimmer, but you need to be able to swim. The minimum level of swimming ability we require is that you can swim 10 lengths of a 25m pool, 2 of which must be completed on your back. You must then hold your breath underwater for 30 seconds.

How deep do you dive?

It depends on your qualification, uncertified trainees may not dive below 10m. 1 star divers may dive to 30m and 2 star divers and above may dive to 45m with a suitably qualified buddy.

How long does it take to learn to dive?

The course consists of a series of lectures and pool work, followed by 5 dives with an instructor. In the past we have had trainees who joined in October receive their 1 star certification by December. However, the length of time taken is largely dependent on the individuals motivation.

What if I already have a diving certification?

Great! We’re always happy to have new members who are already certified. If you’re certification is from another another agency (PADI, SSI, NAUI etc.) we will require you to attend a few lectures and fill in some paperwork in order to cross over to CFT.
