I will be registering new members with CFT over the next few days. Once I’ve registered you, you’ll receive an email from CFT with your CFT number and a password for COMS, the CFT Online Membership System.
Before I can register you, I need you to send me (sdob) an email containing the following information:
- your date of birth;
- the date of your medical assessment, if you have completed it already;
- the email address you’d prefer to use;
- your home address.
I can’t register a new diver without all of this information. Please get back to me ASAP.
The ‘home address’ you use should be as permanent as possible, within reason. All official CFT correspondence — including, most importantly, your certificate! — will be sent there, so it is a good idea to use your home address if your term-time address is likely to change over the next few years. It is not unchangeable, but CFT is not always 100% efficient when changing correspondence addresses and things have been known to get lost in the post.
Once you’ve received your CFT number and password, please make sure that they work correctly by visiting COMS at http://members.cft.ie/ and logging in. You can then edit your profile to add your phone number and contact details for your next of kin.
COMS is used for just about all of CFT’s bureaucracy, from signing up for courses to paying for certificates to confirming insurance, so it’s absolutely imperative that you learn how to use it. For example, you won’t be able to get your certification until you’ve signed up for the Trainee Diver course. The system is set up so that I can’t do it for you, unfortunately (well, unfortunately for you, anyway). You are old enough to die for your country, etc., etc. :-)
There is a member’s guide to COMS available from the website at http://www.uccsubaqua.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/comsguide.pdf. Please download it and read it today.
